ABOUT ME

Hello there! I'm MF James, an author and illustrator who creates fiction and non-fiction books for children. As a children's illustrator, I use my creativity to bring stories to life with colourful and imaginative visuals, adapting my style to match the tone of each story.

In addition to my work as an illustrator, I have been teaching art to children and adults for six years at my studio, Start Studios. Seeing my students experience the joy and pride of creating something they are proud of is incredibly fulfilling as a teacher.

Outside of teaching, I volunteer at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children as an assistant to the play specialist in the oncology department. This role involves engaging and entertaining young patients, which inspired me to create my medical series books.

As a freelance designer and artist, I collaborate with clients on various projects, including branding, editorial, and motion graphics. I create personalized works of art for clients, utilizing my artistic skills to bring their visions to life. It's a fulfilling experience to use my creativity to produce unique and personalized pieces.

Before this, I spent over 15 years as a digital artist on award-winning films such as the Harry Potter series, The Hunger Games, Ex-Machina, James Bond, Batman, and many others. Although the job was challenging, using specialized software and techniques to create stunning visual effects that enhance the film's storytelling was an exciting experience. However, juggling the demands of a career in film with the responsibilities of raising a family was tough, and I opted to work part-time from home. Nonetheless, contributing to some of our time's biggest and most beloved films was a rewarding opportunity.

My career began with studying graphic design at a university in Mexico City, followed by taking a drawing, painting, and photography course at the Lorenzo de' Medici Institute in Florence, Italy.

To further my education in the arts, I enrolled at the Art Institute of Philadelphia, where I focused on studying Animation and Media Arts and did my internship at MTv in New York.  This was the perfect blend of my passions for drawing and cartoons.
